Fiat Punto start up

Car: Fiat Punto
Variant: 1.4 punto sporting 16v
Model Year: 2004
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
On start up 50% of the time the dash lights go out, the engine still cranks but doesn't start, after 2 or 3 tries it fires up and runs fine, the lights don't go out on cranking when it starts. The problems the same on hot or cold starts. I checked and cleaned the earth lead from battery to inner wing and gearbox, still the same problem. the battery seems fine, the clock still displays the correct time after the lights goes out on the dash.
Please help!

faulty ignition switch?have you checked all your wiring connectors to ignition switch and dash and what lights exactly are staying on?

When the car doesn't start no lights stay on, the engine just cranks. When I turn the key and all the display stays on the engine then starts and runs as normal.
Thanks, I'll check the ignition switch next.
