Fiat Punto engine still running after stopped

when i stop my car and turn off the ignition my engine continues to run for about a minute before stopping and my engine occasionally overheats. Can anyone help???

From what you say about overheating , are you sure it's not the electric cooling fan that's running when you switch off ?
