Citroen Xsara car wont start without engine management light on

Car: Citroen Xsara
Variant: 1.4 petrol
Model Year: 1999
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
the problem I have with this car is it runs superb then for no reason at all it will cut out and stop.
When you try to restart it the engine management light does not come on when ignition is turned on so the car wont start.
the e/m/l does sometimes come back on by itself and the car starts immediately.
I have had in on a diagnostic machine and no faults are reported. there does not seem to be any pattern whatsoever when the E/M light comes back on. engine always turns over but will not start
Does anybody know why the engine management light should fail to come on when the ignition is turned on. checked all wiring, connections etc. any ideas welcome
