Citroen Xsara Picasso heater blower on full all the time

Car: Citroen Xsara Picasso
Variant: 1.6 HDi Exclusive
Model Year: 2005
Categories: Leaks & Noises
Just got this car, and the cabin heater blower is on full all the time regardless of speed setting, currently have the fuse removed to stop it.
I understand that the problem is with the Heater Blower Control Unit and that this unit is accessible from the passenger (left) footwell.
Can someone tell me or point me to a place with the information, on how I get the blower unit out and replace the control unit.
I am reasonably mechanically minded and am prepared to do this myself if easy enough :-)
Many thanks

if the blower motor is only working on max setting then a knackered blower motor resistor is normally the cause

To add to " 2145simon " post , re. ballast resistor .

" This is a common problem on picassos and you'll find it on the drivers side at the top of the dash fitted into the heater intake to keep it cool. You can reach it without taking the dash out. There is a portion of the dash that can be removed under the steering wheel try getting to it from there. It's a fairly easy job to do. However sometimes you might find the harness connector is also melted and you may end up haveing to repair or replace the loom."

Hi whittingehame
Thanks for your reply and yes, I have seen this posting before and that is for the problem of the blower ONLY working on setting 4, which indicates that the RESISTOR is faulty, and yes I believe that is access from the driver's (right) side.
But my problem is the blower is on FULL regardless of the setting, which from other websites indicates the CONTROL UNIT is faulty but they do not describe very well on how to remove/replace the unit.
Thanks again for your post.

Is this what you are after ?

found this on another site hope it helps --------------

Fixed it at last!!!!

It was the blower fan controller. This is a unit about the size of a
cigarette packet and is found in the driver's footwell on the left, fairly
high up. Thanks to Paul at the Citroen Centre for telling me this.

Taking the unit out is awkward but not impossible. There are two sockets,
coloured green. One has a pair of thick wires (presumably power out to the
heater fan motor), the other has two thick and four thin wires, I guess that
this is power in and the vanbus multiplex control in and out. You need a 6mm
socket but I would recomment using a magnetic one in case you drop the
fixing self tappers behind the carpet.

Most of the bulk of the unit is a large aluminium heatsink There is a power
transistor inside the unit but I marmalised it trying to unsolder it. The
heatsink clearly seems to work when a soldering iron is used.

Having marmalised it, I had to buy a new unit. Much ferreting and phoning
around and I found that it is Valeo part number 509355 or Citroen part
number 6441L2.

I would recommend Neil Goodall at Vantage Citroen parts 0208 544 9997. He
keeps most Citroen bits. Cost is less than 40 squids plus the dreaded VAT.

Hope this helps all the other people who have reported thae same fault. It
is probably no more than a ten minute job to change the unit for a new one.

Sorry but this does not help. Again that is pointing to the Resistor NOT the Control Unit.
My problem is that the blower is ON FULL ALL THE TIME REGARDLESS OF SETTING.
My problem is NOT "only owrks on setting 4" "only works on one setting", etc. It is on full all the time and I have to take the fuse out. Not good.
Where, how to replace the BLOWER CONTROL UNIT?
Thanks

I know this is a bit late now - but may be of use to other readers. I have had similar problems with the air con blower unit over the past years. It was either completely dead or on full "blow" and would not turn off or change in any way. This was all down to the wiring harness on the blower itself. The wiring seems to get very hot when on full load and the connectors into the blower unit were poorly made. I first found that I could get the blower to start working after checking the security of the connectors, and thought that the problem was solved and it was purely a poor connection. The blower stopped on various occassions over the next few months - and was always fixed by a "wiggle" of the connector. This went on for a year or so! The problem then change when I wiggled the connector and the blower came on full blast and would not be affected by the control panel. Further wiggling resulted in the blower stopping completely. I then got a price from citreon for a new harness - £ 115 so I thought I would remove the harness and see whether I could "repair" the connectors properly. Having removed the harness I could see that some of the wiring was exposed at the conector, very poorly made joint - the insulation exposing the cooper and allowing the adjoining wires to touch (this caused the continuoeus falut with blower). Whilst not a good repair I did manage to get some insulation tape between the wires so that the cooper was not touching. Replacing the harness allowed the unit to function orrectly for another year or so. However, the unit is "playing up again" needing the odd wiggle, so I will be replacing the harness shortly and hopefully see the end to this problem.
