Citroen Xsara Picasso main beam not working

Car: Citroen Xsara Picasso
Variant: 1.6 Petrol
Model Year: 2003
Categories: Steering, Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres
I'm a bit of a newbie here, but looks like a good site where someone may be able to help

2003 Picasso 1.6 Petrol due for MOT in 10 days, but has recently developed a fault with the headlights. The problem is this:

Dipped Headlights, Side Lights, Fog Lights all work OK until main beam is switched on. If either flash or main beam is turned on the blue dashboard light lights up but the dipped lights turn off leaving only side lights on and there is no main beam.

I have checked the light fuses in the fuse box under the bonnet and they seem OK, but I will replace them when the shops re-open just in case.

Can't think it could be the bulbs, as it would seem unlikely that they would both fail at the same time.

Anyone got any ideas?

A mechanic friend said that the COMM2000 unit could be the problem, but that's an expensive unit & I'drather not go that route unless absolutely necessary.

First thing I would check WOULD be the bulbs before getting involved deeper .

Yeah it is common that both bulbs fail so it is right to start there, and if not then check for power with a test light or multimeter before anything else.

Thanks for you replies
Bulbs & fuses changed. Power getting through because side & dipped headlights work, but only until main beam activated.
