Citroen Xsara Picasso grinding noise from under the car from cold

Help!
My car makes a horrible grinding noise that seems to come from underneath the front of the car.
It has been happening for a couple of weeks but only for the first 3-4 mins of driving the car from cold then it dissappears.
I have inspected the underneath of the car and the brakes but cannot find anything wrong!
I am reluctant to take it to a garage for them to spend several expensive hours figuring it out.
Can anyone help???
