Citroen Xantia intermittent starting

ok heres apuzzler car starts and drives fine but occasionally fails to start[lights on no starter action ]just as if inhibitor is on.When it happened the other day i banged the solenoid and off it went.So assumed it was starter bought a new one put it on everything fine started a dozen times.Then wouldnt again.Left ignition on went under bonnet bridged solenoid terminals hey presto started.Then its started on key several times scince.If it happens again i hope it will start with the bridgeing method but thats not a cure its atemporary fix .So any ideas

could be faulty ignition switch get yourself a cheap test light when fault happens again put test light onto small connector wire on starter turn key to start position keep trying it a few times see if it light up some times the end of the ignition barrell wears into the electrical contact so when u turn the key it is not turning it far enough round to send voltage to starter other way is to check output on back of ignition switch if that is ok then you may have a bad wire or connection on the wire
