Citroen C5 complete engine failure

Car: Citroen C5
Variant: 2.2 diesel
Model Year: 2002
Car starts runs and drives really well but occasionally it will just die completly.the only way to restart it is to remove the key lock up the car for approx 1 min then it will restart and run fine?? this can happen after about 1.2 miles or somtimes completly out of the blue??

i suspect the car is forgeting it has a key in it...
i suspect either a can-bus fault within the communications between the engine ecu and the immobiliser via the transponder in the key. or a simple bad earth somewhere!!!

It happens to me when trying to accelerate quickly. While still in motion leaving the clutch engaged in gear, quickly turn the engine on and off. A bit disconcerting in the fast lane but it can be done very quickly.
