oil has leaked from by top of engine not sure exactly ware from an run down onto altanator an knackered it was thinking it could be a gaskeket

Could well be a gasket or a oil seal , you really need to clean the area and locate exactly where the leak is coming from . Once cleaned you could use talc powder to trace the source .
