You could get a diagnostic scan with equipment / software that covers the transmission for fault codes but from what you describe , sounds ominous especially if high mileage

Only 34000 miles - was fine until was in dealer for 4 weeks for an unrelated recall!!

If it all happened immediately after recall you should have returned it right away and complained , got it checked / resolved . Must have been some recall that took 4 weeks !
