Citroen C3 air con whining noise starts after about 10 minutes

I have had no problems with this car, and have the aircon on Auto all the time, as is recommended. However, since about 3 months ago a whining noise starts, usually after about 10 minutes of driving. The noise stops when I turn off the aircon, and restarts if I turn it back on. It is really irritating. Any ideas anyone? I have googled this and not found any similar problems reported. Many thanks
