Citroen C3 noise in lower gears

When accelerating through the lower gears i.e.2nd 3rd and 4th i encounter a whooshing/rasping noise but it seems to disappear when in top gear.My wife noticed it when she is a passenger but i did not notice it till i swopped seats with her.
After resuming the driving seat i was aware of the noise after that.
