Citroen Berlingo starting problems

Car: Citroen Berlingo
Variant: 1.9d manuel forte multispace
Model Year: 2003
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
When driving car lost power and battery had no charge, managed to re-start when going down hill. The battery will not hold charge and needs replacing but could this be the only problem. When trying to start with re-charged battery not enough power and there is a clicking sound from the other side of the engine. If battery re-placed do you think this is the solution ?

Even though these do not really use a much battery power as most vehicles today there are a few systems connected to the diesel pump that relay on good battery voltage.
So I'd say it's a good idea to at least get the charging system checked out and a new battery if needed,

Have fitted new battery and the engine starts but when the revs come down the engine fades out. Then after a wait of a few minutes it will start again with difficulty, only for the same thing to happen.
