Citroen Berlingo engine judder

Car: Citroen Berlingo
Variant: 2.0 HDi
Model Year: 2003
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Most of the time my Berlingo is well behaved but there's a problem when I'm driving at about 1500/2000 rpm, in 4th. or 5th. gear. Going up an incline, even shallow, when I try to accelerate, however steadily, the engine judders as if it is hunting for fuel and I have to change down and rev up. This happens when I'm travelling at normal speeds,ie., 30-35 in 4th. and 35-45 in 5th.

My mechanic hasn't even been able to replicate the problem and I swear he thinks I should drive with lead in me boot!!

Maybe needs the fuel filter replacing ,are there no fault codes .

Thanks for the response. Sorry, I forgot to mention I've had the fuel filter changed. Also there are no fault codes.

Is it possible that your mechanic is correct and that you are in too high a gear for the load placed on the vehicle relative to the gear and load on the vehicle.just your description sound,s like it.If not and there is something wrong then a scan tool to look at the parameter,s of what is happening with fuel, etc would be the only way,or a data logger plugged in to trace the issue.

Sorry, 'Scan tool' and 'Data logger', are they part of the diagnostic test?

Mine is in with mechanic atm with same problem, engine judder when try to cruise, drop revs ok add power ok. nightmare, injectors test ok, he is going to phone diesel specialist to ask....HELP!!

Well, I have finally had it explained to me in terms I can understand. There's nothing wrong with the car, rather, it's all about the difference between petrol and diesel engines in working rev ranges. I could do more in higher revs in my old (petrol) Fiesta than I can in the Berlingo but now that I change down sooner, we get on like old friends. Thanks to the Yeovil mechanic and BK.

Mickey

My partner van is suffering the same symptoms, between 1500-1750 rpm, the juddering is terrible on a very light throttle & I have to change down a gear & build up the revs too. It accelerates away well & also decelerates just like yours. I'm local to Yeovil who did you speak to & could he help me do you think?
Cheers.

Hi Timbob,

Sorry for the delay but I've only just come back to the site. I forget the mechanic's name but he was one of the lads who works at Class 4 MOT, in Vincent Street, Yeovil.

BTW, although it's somewhat better changing down sooner, we're still not entirely happy with it! I expect we'll be changing it as soon as we can afford it.

Regards,
Mic

Hello again Timbob,

You may be pleased to know that we found the solution - we got rid!!

I'm picking up a Renault Scenic on Saturday. On the test drive it not only went like you-know-what off a stick but also drove well at 30 mph on the flat in 5th. gear! That's versatile.

We still have plenty of space behind and it's cheaper to run (55 mpg) and insure.

Hope you find your own answer. :-)
