Citroen Berlingo engine idle

Car: Citroen Berlingo
Variant: HDI
Model Year: 2002
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
80% of the time, the engine runs fine. Then all of a sudden, the engine will rev up to about 2000 rpm and straight back down again, just like somebody is blipping the throttle. It will do this sometimes when the engine is on idle, or going along in traffic at about 10 mph. Any ideas please?

Check / clean idle air control valve (IACV) and also throttle body .

Have you had any warning lights come on? It may be a problem with egr or maybe airflow meter

'Have you had any warning lights come on? It may be a problem with egr or maybe airflow meter'

Yes, for a long time now the stop warning light will flash on the dash board and temp gauge goes fully into red. After a short while, it goes off. BUT, it was doing this before the idle problem.
For me to check the airflow meter, would you be able to explain where it is on the vehicle please?

if as stated it is a Diesel HDi the meter is after the airfilter with a grey connector on it
