BMW X5 lack of power and black smoke

every now and again from starting my car it has no power i have to turn off the engine and re start and the power comes back also having problems with excesive black smoke and am wondering are they linked ?

Probably need to get diagnostic carried out , but could check engine temp coolant sensor or have a look here re. suggestions on same fault .
