BMW 3 Series engine revving when warm

Car: BMW 3 Series
Variant: 318i SE
Model Year: 2002
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
My 2002 318i SE 2.0litre petrol engine revs itself between 1200 and 1600 revs in five second cycles when the engine is at running temperature. Normal idling revs is 800 rpm. What is the cause of this and is it easily remedied?

I.C.V ( Idle control valve ) ? Could also check no vacuum / air pipes split or loose .

Plug in diagnostic module (OBD-II scanner can be bought from eBay for around £20) to check for fault codes.

Check that oil filler cap is securely fastened and and no splits in air hoses.
