my car is overheating so i don't know what could be a problem, i decided to invite a machanic to have a look he told me it could be anything.my worry is his meant to be starting working on it next week but he told me his going to strip bits by bits till he found out what's the problem is which obviously i could end up paying him a lot of money for things which he didn't have to change.my question is, is it possible to tell exactly what could be the problem by driving the car rather then changing everything till u find the problem?

Many possible causes . Could be something simple like thermostat . May be a partially blocked radiator or a faulty water pump .Bigger job would be head gasket but this could be simply verified by getting a block test carried out . A pressure test on cooling system will show any external leaks from hoses , pump , rad etc.You would be crazy to let any one just fit parts at your expense , hoping to find fault .
