BMW 1 Series intermittently losing power

Car: BMW 1 Series
Variant: 116d Sport
Model Year: 2011
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power LossElectrics, ECU, Warnings & Lights
This started as an occasional intermittent problem. The car would suddenly start to slow down as if the brakes were being applied, then after a few seconds it would pick up speed again. The problem is now much more severe and happens frequently. The car now jerks as if the brakes are being applied intermittently or there is some sort of problem with a failure to smoothly accelerate. When it slows down a warning light on the information centre flashes. It is a a circle with an arrow containing a triangle, and inside that is an exclamation mark.

This is what it signifies .

STABILITY / TRACTION CONTROL DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHT
This light illuminates when Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) or Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) is deactivated. If it flashes, it means DSC or DTC is controlling drive and braking

Many thanks for the response. Any suggestions as to what might be causing the problem?

Can be caused by ABS sensor fault for whatever reason . Often cleaning sensors can cure this .

Thanks for pointing me to this thread. It appears the problem is wider than I realised. It also means I was right not to accept my local BMWs garage's quote for repairing the problem - over £3000!
