BMW 1 Series intermittent turbo failure

Car: BMW 1 Series
Variant: 120d Sport
Model Year: 2005
Categories: Electrics, ECU, Warnings & Lights
Recently the turbo has been playing up, it either works for the whole journey; or it does. In the event of it not working (symptoms being that I dont feel the pull of the car as I normally would when its working, and reduced MPG and performance on motorways), generally I can get it back by switching the engine off and trying again. I've had it in for a diagnostics check at the garage and this has shown no fault codes so I'm left a little perplexed. Having done some research on the internet I'v figured it could be a number of things from MAF sensor to vaccuum hoses.

Any advice gratefully received, thanks.

If anyone ever happens upon this problem I seem to have fixed it by cleaning the EGR valve, its been 2 weeks now since I did it and the problem hasnt resurfaced.
