Audi A3 blue smoke/ burning oil

Car: Audi A3
Variant: 1.6 8v
Model Year: 1997
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
I've recenetly noticed that my car chucks out a haze of blue smoke after being idle for a while and was wandering how serious this a problem this is...

A few people have said valve stem seals and piston rings but I'd like some confirmation that that is the only thing that could be causing it!

If somebody could give me some advise on how hard it would be to replace them, or whether it would be easier (and cheaper) simply to drop a new engine in, and how serious a problem it is, it'd be greatly appreciated!!!...

Thanks

firstly if the piston rings have gone you would have to top the oil up on a regular basis and you have said its blue smoke which would say to me valve stem seals also having the car idling for a while wont do it any good at all as this is where most wear takes place from cold that is the only thing i will suggest is do a oil and filter change as the old oil could have lost its viscosity and the oil is not doing what it should be doing

dear MrPhil
as suggested by first members solution, i tend to agree, valve stem seals & oil & filter change.
however has your car lost power & become hard to start, ie turning over a long time on starter before engine starting,if so then it could well be piston rings.as for the most econ solution, i'm afraid i can't help as i've had no connection with audi expenses. hope i've helped in some way, best of luck, regards dj dave
