Timing Chain Tensioner

What is a Timing Chain Tensioner?
The timing chain tensioner generally sits inside the chain and keeps it at the correct tension so that the crankshafts/engine runs at the optimum speeds. Problems with the tensioner will often result in a ticking sound from the engine area as the chain will be slacker than it should and so the timing on the cams won't be quite right, leading to noises.
What problems can be caused by this part?

Engine makes ticking sound

When idling the engine sounds like its ticking inside. The ticking noise is sometimes louder, often just after starting up it's louder. The ticking sound increases in frequency when the accelerator is pressed down to increase engine revs.

Check Engine warning light showing on dashboard

The dashboard warning light showing on this page (or one very similar, sometimes a slightly different shape or colour) has appeared on the dashboard and doesn't go off when the car is running.

How much does it cost to replace the Timing Chain Tensioner?
The cost of a chain tensioner is pretty reasonable, they're generally between £15 to £70 for the part. As with anything to do with engine timing the labour cost will add significantly to the bill to replace the tensioner. It will generally be replaced as part of replacing the chain itself.
