Gearbox Linkage

What is a Gearbox Linkage?
The gearbox linkage is a complex set of linking rods that transfer the movement of the gear stick to the gearbox. The system 'converts' the left/right and forward/back movements into the correct gear selection at the gearbox.

Repairing problems with the gear linkage is a job for mechanic or engine specialist and it usually well beyond the skills of the DIY mecahnic.
What problems can be caused by this part?

Gearbox noisy when changing gear

When changing gear the movement of the gearstick is more awkward than it was before and there's often a strange noise coming from the gearbox area.

Gear changes are difficult

Changes between gears have become difficult, the gearstick no longer moves freely between gears, it sometimes seems to get stuck or won't go into a gear properly.

Car pops out of a gear

When driving along the gear stick will suddenly pop out of gear into neutral, this will often result in over-revving the engine if your foot is on the accelerator. It will often also be difficult to change into some gears.

How much does it cost to replace the Gearbox Linkage?
The linkage will generally cost from £75 to £200 depending on the manufacturer. 1 to 2 hours labour is normal but it can take longer on some cars.
