Andy Harvey, Bothwell
This garage repaired an intermitent alarm on my octavia. The alarm is fixed but they were far too hung ho in replacing parts that probably did not need replacing. The explanation is below. If you need to use this garage then micro manage their work if you want to pay only for what needs to be done.
Many garages take the approach of simply replacing everything, especially with electronics that they don't have the skills to diagnose well, but I was particularly irritated that this was done here with minimal consultation resulting in a bill for £400 - with an opportunity for proper discussion I'd have hoped to have been able to keep the bill down -or to have tried to. My usual local garage is much better in this regard. For example I was told that computer diagnostics indicated a 'malfunctioning sensor', but the mechanic was unable to tell me which sensor. It turned out to be the interior motion sensors which were were then replaced, but the evidence suggests these were not the root cause - I had already explained that switching off the sensors did not fix the problem - in fact the alarm had sounded whilst i was driving. They also replaced the siren - because it 'didn't sound right' - so that was an extra £200 added to the bill for an alarm that now 'sounds right' - I'd rather have the £200 - but was given no informed choice. Most electronic problems are simply poor connections that can be fixed cheaply and quickly - this is not the sort of approach taken in this example.
