Rover 400 Owner Reviews
8/ 10

Gary, Bournemouth

I picked up an R reg 400 ( Honda engine ) that had been looked after, as a cheap runabout. I have grown very fond of this little car. Everything works! The car starts first time every morning. The heater is superb. Even the interior light stays on to let me know if I haven't shut a door properly. Fuel consumption is reasonable and quite a nippy 16v engine. Well balanced car, which corners like a go cart ( if this should be adopted this as a driving style ). Nice ' Dad style ' isolators on the rear electric windows are a great touch.

I have been told that the ' Honda ' Rover 400 ( square headlights ) have less engine problems than the later ( after R reg / round double headlights ) BMW versions, which can be prone to engines cooking and blowing head gaskets - apparently. I have heard this from a couple of seperate sources.
Possibly something to keep an eye out for? Both engines need attention to cam belt servicing, as in all more mature vehicles. I have been told that this is quite an elaborate process and involves removal of part of the front axle assembly to be done properly. Am saving up and will find out in the fullness of time.

My 400 has just passed the MOT no trouble ( bulbs / couple of tyres ), so I'm particularly enamoured with it at the moment. Happy days.
