Renault Clio Owner Reviews

Gavin

Had a 2003 Clio 172. Absolutely brilliant engine and the car was a proper riot to drive, torque steering everywhere, plenty of safe understeer and loads of power to keep it interesting.

Took it on track days a few times, kept up with much quicker cars and didn't have any issues after a full day of driving.

Driving position is poor, interior quality isn't great, but none of that matters when you get the engine revving.

Model: Renaultsport Clio 172 Cup
Year: 2003
Engine: 2.0l 16v / 172bhp

Having bought my Clio brand new (pre registered) in March 2004 I can honestly say I've had three and a half years (58,000 miles) of what can only be described as joyful driving.

Performance: This car never fails to put a smile on my face every time I plant the throttle. The combination of light weight and ample bhp can surprise many a folks with far more expensive machinery. It has limits thought, so don't expect it to outpace every turbo or type-r that 'has a go at you'.

Handling: While rather twitchy under hard braking and acceleration, is very responsive and precise through corners. No ABS or TC though, so don't go breaking hard into corners or in the wet (it could end in tears). Torque understeer when accelerating out of a bend is quite bad but plenty of feedback through the steering wheel makes it predictable and easy to control - same applies to torque steer while accelerating hard in 1st and 2nd.

Quality & Reliability: I've heard bad things, but apart from a seized break calliper (replaced under warranty) and a new exhaust it's been nothing but happy motoring for me. At the end of the day it's a 10 grand car so don't expect refinement, it squeaks and rattles like any other 10 grand car.

All in all it's a great wee package of fun for driving thrills and seeing off the odd hot head who thinks his 30k rep mobile should be wiping the floor with "a Clio!"...

Mike.
