Had a 1996 406 Diesel executive bought with 123,000 miles on it, drove it until it had 242,000 on it with some faults coming up, the only one that took it off the road was a power steering leak, which I think I caused while parking until the throttle cable went and I traded it.
Then I had a 2000 406 Hdi executive with 52,000 miles on it, drove it until it got to 172,000 miles, needed an air con controller and a clutch so traded it too against a 2000 406 with 80,000 miles on it, had a few faults fixed before I drove it regularly. Had a sticky brake calliper recently and think the car may have been clocked before I got it, but its still fine.
All have been quiet, economical (I get 50-52 mpg over an average of several thousand miles on the fuel computer and this is backed up by getting 900+ miles out of a 75 Litre tank), and very comfortable. Pity they don't make them any more, am going to have to chance a 407 when this one dies, but I think I should get a reasonable value second hand car with plenty of good gadgets and reasonable reliability. I have always had my cars serviced as required by Peugeot if that's the key yo reliability?

Bought a Y reg (2001) GTX HDi 110 estate in April 2007
Love it! Had it from 129,000 to 152,000 miles so far. Plan on a few more years yet.
Good points :- Big, roomy yet economical - 40plus mpg round town 50 on a run - great for camping with family/friends. Robust and comfy. Slept in it instead of putting the tent up a couple of times too.
Minor concern - lose speedo occasionally.
